Different countries are located in different parts of the world. We get information about their location with the help of globes and maps. Globes and maps are used to show the earth or different parts of the earth and to gather information, for example, about population, flora, climate and so on of any country.

Globe(Globe and Images)

The globe is used to see the clear shape of the earth and its surface features. It shows the distribution of land and water There is a network of lines of longitude and latitude on it. The whole world can be seen on the globes at a glance and it rotates on its own axis.

Take a close look at the given map (The elements of the map are)shown on it. The elements of the map help to understand the map. We can say These elements  are known as “Border, Orientation/ direction, Legend/key, Title and Scale”. Information about the elements of map is as follows.

Orientation/ Direction

In order to reach North any place, , south we travel east in a west certain direction, that is, to the North, South, East or West. (These are the four basic orientations or directions. They are also called the cardinal points

In order to reach North any place, , south we travel east in a west certain direction, that is, to the North, South, East or West. (These are the four basic orientations or directions. They are also called the cardinal points? In between the four basic directions there are secondary and tertiary direction. These secondary orientations are called Northeast, Northwest, Southeast and Southwest. These orientations or directions are used in maps so as to give clarity. North is the most important orientation. It can be indicated by an arrow on the map. If we stand facing the sun early in the morning, we will be facing the East orientation, our back will be towards West, our right side will be towards South and our left will be towards North.

Legend/ Key

Symbols are used to represent different objects and places on the earth. There is a legend/key on the map in which different places are shown on the map through different symbols. Green colour is generally used to show the trees or forest. In order to show mountains brown colour is used and blue represents water.

Each map has a title to indicate its purpose. Without a title, it is difficult to get information about the map.

For example, maps are titled as showing world population map Pakistan, political map of Pakistan, physical features of Pakistan, industries of Pakistan etc.

Scale

Scale definition is The ratio is  b/w ground distance and also map distance is called ‘scale’. For example, the distance between two places is 6 kilometers. To show these places on a map 6 kilometers can be drawn on paper so we set a certain ratio to represent this distance. That means, we can show this distance by showing one kilometer on paper as one centimeter on map. From this ratio, the distance of 6 kilometers will be six centimeters and on the map we will show the distance between these two places in centimeters.
