About AKHS-A (Aga Khan Health Service-Afghanistan):

Aga Khan Health Services (AKHS) is one of the most comprehensive private, not‐for‐profit health care systems in the developing world with community health programs in large geographical areas in Central and South Asia, as well as in East Africa.

The Aga Khan Health Services, Afghanistan (AKHS, A) was established in 2003 as part of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN). AKHS, A provides health care services mainly on behalf of the government including the Ministry of Public Health’s of Afghanistan’s Basic Package of Health Services (BPHS) and Essential Package of Hospital Services (EPHS). AKHS, A is unique both in scale and scope, delivering critical health services along the continuum of care, from Community Health Workers (CHWs) to ISO certified hospital facilities.

AKHS, A is currently implementing healthcare services in Bamyan, Baghlan, Badakhshan, Kabul and Takhar provinces. The agency’s scope of work includes the provision of primary and secondary healthcare, preventive and curative medical care, Nursing and Midwifery education, Human Resources Development and Hospital Management. As BPHS and EPHS implementer, AKHS, A provides technical support as well as capacity building of health personnel, immunization services, nutrition trainings and the training of Community Health Nurses and Community Health Midwives.

AKHS, A draws on internal and other donor fundings to continue supplementary and complementary support to the national health system. Moreover, AKHS, A has introduced innovations, including, expansions of e-Health services, e-learning initiatives, and cross border arrangements. To promote healthy environment, AKHS, A is also implementing net zero and greenhouse gas emission initiatives.

Job Description:

  • Monitors and manages accounts payable processes to ensure timely, accurate payments and effective supplier account management.
  • Maintains accurate general ledger entries for payables, cash, bank, credit cards and interunit accounts.
  • Executes the daily accounting cycle, including preparation of journal entries and routine account reconciliations.
  • Reconciles all bank accounts monthly within set deadlines and ensure accurate posting of deposit slips.
  • Processes, allocates and reconciles credit card transactions daily in coordination with the chief cashier and banking institutions.
  • Processes and reconciles transactions daily, ensures timely transfer of funds and accurate reconciliation for all centers.
  • Oversees the recording, tracking, and reconciliation of fixed assets, maintaining an up-to-date asset register.
  • Reviews, verifies and records invoices in the accounting system, ensuring completeness and accuracy of supporting documentation.
  • Prepares supplier and creditor reconciliations regularly, including monthly reconciliation of accrual and care accounts.
  • Manages debtor accounts, including analysis of staff debtors, unsecured discharges, follow-up on outstanding balances and coordination with debt collectors.
  • Supports timely and accurate financial reporting through proper documentation, reconciliations and review of financial statements.
  • Ensures compliance with internal controls, finance policies and local and international accounting and tax regulations.
  • Assists with internal and external audits, tax filings and preparation of financial data and schedules.
  • Utilize accounting software and financial information systems to support efficient and accurate accounting operations.
  • Maintains finance quality and compliance documentation, including finance policies and participation in quality initiatives.
  • Performs any other tasks as assigned by the Line Manager.

Job Requirements:

Minimum 3 years of relevant experience in the Accounting field, preferably within healthcare systems or large service organizations.

  • A bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, Business Administration or a related field from a recognized institution.
  • MBA Degree and some papers of ACCA are preferred as an additional advantage.
  • Sound knowledge of ERP MS dynamics.
  • Sound knowledge of basic accounting procedures, general ledger functions and month-end and year-end close processes.
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications.
  • Results-driven, ethical and adaptable professional with a strong service and stakeholder focus.
  • Strong integrity with the sensitivity to manage confidential information.
  • Demonstrates superior organizational skills and the agility to multitask and assume changing strategic responsibilities in a dynamic environment.
  • Possesses strong integrity, intellectual humility and demonstrable expertise in navigating ambiguity and constant change.
  • Shows resilience, flexibility and perseverance, especially during challenging periods.
  • Culturally sensitive, inclusive and respectful of diverse populations, reflecting the global values of the AKDN.
